SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Harriet Hausman, who passed away on
4November 7, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman was a lifetime resident of
6Illinois and a committed member of the Oak Park and River
7Forest Community; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman lived an exemplary life devoted
9to fairness, equality, and respect for human rights, long
10recognizing the role that each of us has in making those goals
11a reality in our lives and our community; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman was a prodigious writer, sharing
13her views in local papers on a range of issues, including
14racial equality, reproductive rights, voting rights and LGBTQ+
15rights, publishing her final submission to the Wednesday
16Journal just days before her death; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman was an active member of the Oak
18Park Temple, where she regularly organized educational events
19that focused on the need for understanding, tolerance, and
20respect for the rights of others; and

1    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman was a longtime member of the
2American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, having joined the
3ACLU as a high school student, and served as a longtime member
4of the board of directors for the organization; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman and her husband, Marty, showed a
6particular commitment to the principle of free speech after
7the ACLU defended the rights of neo-Nazis to march in Skokie in
8the 1970s, traveling to synagogues across the area to listen
9to and address the concerns of Jewish residents across
10Illinois; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Harriet Hausman continued throughout her life to
12inspire love, admiration, and dedication among the many who
13came to know and appreciate her unrelenting, unwavering
14commitment to building bridges and advancing basic rights;
15therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Harriet Hausman and extend our sincere condolences to her
19family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That we celebrate the life of Harriet Hausman
22and express gratitude for the many contributions she made to

1her community in Illinois; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Harriet Hausman as an expression of
4our deepest sympathy.
