 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The House of Representatives has learned that an
 3    Illinois resident has been named  the  recipient  of  one  of
 4    journalism's most prestigious awards, the Pulitzer Prize; and

 5        WHEREAS,  The  Pulitzer Prize was awarded for a series of
 6    editorials on reforming the death penalty  that  appeared  in
 7    the Chicago Tribune; and

 8        WHEREAS,  There  has  been  no  more  intense and serious
 9    debate in Illinois in recent years than that over the  reform
10    of the capital punishment system; and

11        WHEREAS,  Much  of  the  focus as well as the impetus for
12    this debate has come from the continuing series of editorials
13    written by the Chicago Tribune's Cornelia Grumman; and

14        WHEREAS, It is worth noting  that  the  Illinois  General
15    Assembly, using the input of those editorials and a myriad of
16    other  sources,  has  taken  steps  in  recent  days to enact
17    serious reforms of the capital punishment system; and

18        WHEREAS, The Pulitzer committee  cited  Cornelia  Grumman
19    for her "powerful, freshly challenging editorials against the
20    death penalty"; and

21        WHEREAS,  While now ensconced in the lofty tower occupied
22    by all writers of  editorials,  Cornelia  Grumman  honed  her
23    skills  with  stints  at  State  government reporting for the
24    Tribune, the  Daily  Southtown,  and  the  Raleigh  News  and
25    Observer; therefore, be it

26        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
27    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
28    we salute Cornelia Grumman on the occasion of her being named
29    the  recipient  of  the  2003  Pulitzer  Prize  for Editorial
30    Writing; and be it further

 1        RESOLVED, That we express the thanks of the people of the
 2    State of Illinois for her contribution to the debate over the
 3    death penalty; and be it further

 4        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 5    presented to Cornelia Grumman and to the Chicago Tribune.
