HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Hundreds of people die and thousands are injured
3 each year in electrical accidents; and
 
4     WHEREAS, There are, on average, 910 civilian deaths related
5 to electrical home structure fires; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Nearly three people are electrocuted in the home
7 and five more in the workplace each week; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Property damage due to home fires caused by
9 electrical distribution, appliances and equipment, and heating
10 and air conditioning systems amounts to nearly $1.7 billion
11 annually; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Following basic electrical safety precautions can
13 help prevent injury or death to thousands of people each year;
14 and
 
15     WHEREAS, Citizens are encouraged to check their home and
16 workplace for possible electrical hazards to help protect lives
17 and property; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Citizens are encouraged to test their smoke
19 detectors and ground fault circuit interrupters monthly and
20 after every major electrical storm; and
 
21     WHEREAS, It is important to establish and practice
22 electrical safety habits in the home, school, and workplace to
23 decrease electrical hazards, injuries, and property damage,
24 and to prevent deaths; and
 
25     WHEREAS, The efforts of the Electrical Safety Foundation
26 International and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
27 promote and educate the public about the importance of

1 respecting electricity and practicing electrical safety in the
2 home, school, and workplace; and
 
3     WHEREAS, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
4 Local Union 364, is actively helping to move this effort
5 forward in order to reduce the number of electrical injuries
6 and deaths from electrical hazards; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9 we recognize May as Electrical Safety Month and urge the people
10 of Illinois to participate in Electrical Safety Month
11 activities and to conduct an electrical safety check of their
12 home, school, and workplace.
