HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of A. George Hovanec of Springfield, who passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer; and

WHEREAS, George Hovanec graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science and from The Ohio State University with a Master of Public Administration; and

WHEREAS, In 1978, George Hovanec began his career as Deputy Director of the Illinois Bureau of Budget; he then served as State Medicaid Director and as interim Director of the Illinois Department of Public Aid, where he was revered as an outstanding public servant; and

WHEREAS, Since 2005, George Hovanec had been a highly respected advisor to both Children's Memorial Hospital/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and the Community Behavioral Healthcare Association of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Among his many noteworthy achievements, George Hovanec served in a critical role as an advisor analyzing Medicaid access and funding and had a direct and material impact on the health and well-being of the children and families in Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, George Hovanec earned the respect of leading policymakers across the nation for his vast experience and expertise in state and federal Medicaid policy; and

WHEREAS, George Hovanec was a man of strong faith, a devout Catholic; and

WHEREAS, George Hovanec loved to organize games of golf and softball with friends and was an ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers; and

WHEREAS, George Hovanec's contributions as a brilliant, thoughtful, hard-working, humble, humorous, generous, and compassionate person will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know him; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of A. George Hovanec and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George Hovanec as an expression of our appreciation for his extraordinary life and friendship and as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
