1     AN ACT concerning health.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act is
5 amended by adding Section 3.2 as follows:
 
6     (410 ILCS 625/3.2 new)
7     Sec. 3.2. Food banks.
8     (a) For purposes of this Section, "food bank" means a
9 public or charitable institution that maintains an established
10 operation involving the provision of food or edible commodities
11 to food pantries, soup kitchens, hunger relief centers, or
12 other feeding programs that, as an integral part of their
13 normal activities, provide meals or food to needy persons.
14     (b) All food banks that provide food to feeding programs in
15 Illinois shall provide a list of its member food pantries, soup
16 kitchens, hunger relief centers, and other feeding programs to
17 the State-certified local public health department or
18 departments having jurisdiction in its service area. Food banks
19 must provide this list to local public health departments
20 annually and the listing shall include the following
21 information about each food pantry, soup kitchen, hunger relief
22 center, and other feeding program:
23         (1) agency name;

1         (2) type of feeding program;
2         (3) address;
3         (4) phone number; and
4         (5) fax number.
5     The intent of having food banks provide this information
6 annually to the local public health department is solely for
7 the purpose of ensuring that food recall alerts and other
8 pertinent information will be communicated to food pantries,
9 soup kitchens, hunger relief centers, and other feeding
10 programs in a timely fashion.
 
11     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January
12 1, 2009.
