HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Gene Amberg, Superintendent of Schools for Urbana School District 116, on his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Gene Amberg has served as the Superintendent of Schools since 1992; he also is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, Gene Amberg received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History, his Master of Arts degree in Education, and his Ph.D. in Educational Administration at Saint Louis University; and

WHEREAS, Gene Amberg was a member of the United States Educator Delegation to China in 2006; he received the Those Who Excel Award from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2002-2003; he received the Eugene L. Amberg Endowed Chair for Excellence in Teaching from the Champaign-Urbana Schools Foundation in 2002; and the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education Recognition Award in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Gene Amberg is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Illinois; he is a gubernatorial appointee to the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership; he is a member of the Board of Directors for the Champaign-Urbana Schools Foundation; he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Economic Development Council for the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce; and he was a member of the Board of Directors for the Urban League of Champaign County from 1995 to 2002; and

WHEREAS, While serving as Superintendent of Schools, Gene Amberg has overseen construction and renovation projects over the last three years totaling $30 million; he has overseen the construction of the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center; he has overseen national, award-winning multi-cultural and bilingual programs; he has overseen national, award-winning fine arts, concert bands, orchestra, and choral programs; and

WHEREAS, Gene Amberg has developed a joint Urbana School District and University of Illinois Early Childhood Programs for at-risk children; he established a partnership with the University of Illinois Novice Teachers Program; and he works with Project Even Start, a family literacy program for parents and children ; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Gene Amberg, Superintendent of Schools for Urbana School District 116, on his retirement and wish him continued success in his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Gene Amberg as a symbol of our respect.
