Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS)

Updating the database of the Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS) is an ongoing process. Recent laws may not yet be included in the ILCS database, but they are found on this site as Public Acts soon after they become law. For information concerning the relationship between statutes and Public Acts, refer to the Guide.

Because the statute database is maintained primarily for legislative drafting purposes, statutory changes are sometimes included in the statute database before they take effect. If the source note at the end of a Section of the statutes includes a Public Act that has not yet taken effect, the version of the law that is currently in effect may have already been removed from the database and you should refer to that Public Act to see the changes made to the current law.

    Sec. 5. Definitions. In this Act:
    "Court" means an open space on a lot, other than a yard or portion of a yard, that is unobstructed from its lowest level to the sky and bounded, in whole or part, by abutting property lines, exterior building walls or other enclosing devices.
    "Low-sloped roof" mean roof with a slope of less than 2 units vertical in 12 units horizontal (17% slope).
    "Parapet" means a barrier that extends upward from the edge of a structure, such as a roof, balcony, walkway, or terrace.
    "Shaft" means a continuous vertical space substantially enclosed on all sides that extends for 2 or more floors, including, but not limited to, an elevator shaft, a ventilation shaft, a stairwell, or a service shaft.
