      20 ILCS 505/8             from Ch. 23, par. 5008
          Amends the Children and Family Services Act. Changes  the
      maximum  number  of  children under care who are eligible for
      scholarships and fee waivers to 500 (now 24).  Provides  that
      at  least  75  (now  at  least  4) of those selected shall be
      children of veterans.  Effective July 1, 1997.

 1        AN ACT to amend the Children and Family Services  Act  by
 2    changing Section 8.
 3        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section 5.  The  Children  and  Family  Services  Act  is
 6    amended by changing Section 8 as follows:
 7        (20 ILCS 505/8) (from Ch. 23, par. 5008)
 8        Sec.  8.   Scholarships  and  fee waivers.  Each year the
 9    Department may select from among the children  under  care  a
10    maximum  of  500  24 students, at least 75 4 of whom shall be
11    children of veterans,  who  have  completed  4  years  in  an
12    accredited high school who shall be eligible for scholarships
13    and  fee  waivers  which  will  entitle them to 4 consecutive
14    years of community college, university or college  education.
15    Selection  shall  be  made on the basis of scholastic record,
16    aptitude  and  general  interest  in  higher  education.   In
17    accordance  with  this  Act,  tuition  scholarships  and  fee
18    waivers shall be available to such students at any university
19    or   college   maintained  by  the  State  of  Illinois.  The
20    Department shall provide  maintenance  and  school  expenses,
21    except  tuition  and  fees,  during  the  academic  years  to
22    supplement  the students' earnings or other resources so long
23    as they consistently maintain scholastic  records  which  are
24    acceptable  to  their schools and to the Department. Students
25    may attend other colleges and universities,  if  scholarships
26    are   awarded   them,  and  receive  the  same  benefits  for
27    maintenance and other expenses as  those  students  attending
28    any  Illinois  State community college, university or college
29    under this Section.

 1        Section  99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect July
 2    1, 1997.
