      105 ILCS 5/27-22          from Ch. 122, par. 27-22
          Amends the School Code.  Establishes a one year course of
      study of the history, culture, and geography  of  non-Western
      societies  as  an  additional course required for high school
      graduation  for  all  pupils  (other   than   students   with
      disabilities  whose  course  of  study  is  determined  by an
      individualized education  program)  entering  the  9th  grade
      during  the  1998-99  or a subsequent school year.  Effective
      January 1, 1998.

 1        AN ACT to amend  the  School  Code  by  changing  Section
 2    27-22.
 3        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section 5.   The  School  Code  is  amended  by  changing
 6    Section 27-22 as follows:
 7        (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
 8        Sec. 27-22.  Required high school courses.
 9        (a)  As   a  prerequisite  to  receiving  a  high  school
10    diploma, each pupil entering the 9th grade in  1984-1985  and
11    subsequent   years   must,   in   addition  to  other  course
12    requirements, successfully complete the following courses:
13             1.  three years of language arts;
14             2.  two years of mathematics, one of  which  may  be
15        related to computer technology;
16             3.  one year of science;
17             4.  two  years  of social studies, of which at least
18        one year must be  history  of  the  United  States  or  a
19        combination  of history of the United States and American
20        government but none of which shall duplicate  or  include
21        the  content  of  the  course  requirement established by
22        subsection (b); and
23             5.  One year chosen from (A)  music,  (B)  art,  (C)
24        foreign  language,  which  shall  be  deemed  to  include
25        American Sign Language or (D) vocational education.
26        This  amendatory  Act  of  1983  does not apply to pupils
27    entering the 9th grade in 1983-1984  school  year  and  prior
28    school years or to students with disabilities whose course of
29    study is determined by an individualized education program.
30        (b)  In  addition to other course requirements, including
31    all course requirements established under subsection  (a)  of

 1    this  Section,  each  pupil entering the 9th grade during the
 2    1998-1999 or any subsequent school  year  shall  successfully
 3    complete,  as  a  prerequisite  to  receiving  a  high school
 4    diploma, a one year course of study of the history,  culture,
 5    and geography of non-Western societies.  This subsection does
 6    not apply to students with disabilities whose course of study
 7    is determined by an individualized education program.
 8        (c)  The  provisions  of  this Section are subject to the
 9    provisions of Section 27-22.05.

11        Section 99.   Effective  date.   This  Act  takes  effect
12    January 1, 1998.
