      720 ILCS 5/18-2           from Ch. 38, par. 18-2
          Amends the Criminal Code of 1961.  Increases the  minimum
      term  of  imprisonment  for  the  commission of armed robbery
      while armed with a category I  weapon  from  6  years  to  15
      years.

 1        AN  ACT  to  amend  the Criminal Code of 1961 by changing
 2    Section 18-2.
 3        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section  5.   The  Criminal  Code  of  1961 is amended by
 6    changing Section 18-2 as follows:
 7        (720 ILCS 5/18-2) (from Ch. 38, par. 18-2)
 8        Sec. 18-2. Armed robbery.  (a)  A  person  commits  armed
 9    robbery  when he or she violates Section 18-1 while he or she
10    carries on or about his or her person, or is otherwise  armed
11    with a dangerous weapon.
12        (b)  Sentence.
13        Armed  robbery  is a Class X felony.  Armed robbery while
14    armed with a category I weapon as defined in Section 33A-1 of
15    this Code is a Class X felony for which the  defendant  shall
16    be  sentenced  to a minimum term of imprisonment of 15 years.
17    Armed robbery while  armed  with  a  category  II  weapon  as
18    defined in Section 33A-1 of this Code is a Class X felony for
19    which  the  defendant shall be sentenced to a minimum term of
20    imprisonment of 10 years.  Armed robbery while armed  with  a
21    category  III weapon as defined in Section 33A-1 of this Code
22    is a Class X felony.

24        Section 99.  Effective date.  This Act takes effect  upon
25    becoming law.
