Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no
person shall operate a school bus manufactured after the
effective date of this amendatory Act that is not equipped
with seat belts for the passengers and a rooftop safety
hatch. Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT to amend the Illinois Vehicle Code by adding
2 Section 12-807.2.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
6 adding Section 12-807.2 as follows:
7 (625 ILCS 5/12-807.2 new)
8 Sec. 12-807.2. Bus seat safety belts; rooftop safety
9 hatch.
10 (a) No person shall operate any Type I or Type II school
11 bus manufactured after the effective date of this amendatory
12 Act of 1997 unless a set of seat safety belts in good
13 operating condition is available to each passenger and the
14 school bus is equipped with a rooftop safety hatch. The
15 belts and belt anchorages shall conform to the equipment
16 requirements of this Article VIII.
17 (b) This Section does not apply to a school bus legally
18 registered in another state and displaying valid registration
19 plates of that state if the bus is not operated in Illinois
20 on a regular basis and if the bus is being operated in
21 Illinois in connection with the cultural, tourist, athletic,
22 or similar activities of persons enrolled as students in a
23 school or schools located outside of Illinois.
24 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
25 becoming law.
