Allows the township board of a township with a population of less than 100,000 to increase the levy for fire protection, rescue, and emergency vehicles and equipment from 0.02% to 0.125% of the value of all taxable property within the township as equalized and assessed by the Department of Revenue if approved by referendum. LRB9003621DNpc HB1007 Enrolled LRB9003621DNpc 1 AN ACT to amend the Township Code by adding Section 2 200-12. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The Township Code is amended by adding 6 Section 200-12 as follows: 7 (60 ILCS 1/200-12 new) 8 Sec. 200-12. Tax increase; referendum. A township with 9 a population of less than 100,000 may levy taxes at a rate in 10 excess of 0.02% of the value of all taxable property within 11 the township as equalized or assessed by the Department of 12 Revenue if the increase is approved by the voters as provided 13 in this Section. The township board may, by ordinance, place 14 the question of whether the tax rate of the township should 15 be increased from 0.02% to 0.125% for fire protection, 16 rescue, and emergency vehicles and equipment on the ballot at 17 any election. The township board shall certify the question 18 to the proper election officials, who shall submit the 19 question at an election in accordance with the general 20 election law. The question shall be in the following form. 21 Shall the maximum allowable tax rate for the (name 22 of township) Township, be increased from 0.02% to 0.125% 23 of the value of all taxable property within the township 24 as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue for 25 fire protection, rescue, and emergency vehicles and 26 equipment? 27 The votes shall be recorded as "Yes" or "No". 28 The result of the referendum shall be entered upon the 29 records of the township. If a majority of the voters at the 30 election vote in favor of the proposition, the township may 31 levy taxes annually at a tax extendable rate not to exceed HB1007 Enrolled -2- LRB9003621DNpc 1 0.125% of the value of all taxable property within the 2 township as equalized or assessed by the Department of 3 Revenue. 4 A referendum held under this Section shall be conducted 5 in accordance with the Election Code. 6 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 7 becoming law.
