      730 ILCS 5/5-5-1          from Ch. 38, par. 1005-5-1
          Amends  the  Unified  Code  of  Corrections.    Makes   a
      grammatical  change  in Section specifying the classification
      of offenses.

 1        AN ACT to  amend  the  Unified  Code  of  Corrections  by
 2    changing Section 5-5-1.
 3        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section 5.  The Unified Code of Corrections is amended by
 6    changing Section 5-5-1 as follows:
 7        (730 ILCS 5/5-5-1) (from Ch. 38, par. 1005-5-1)
 8        Sec.  5-5-1.   Classification  of   Offenses.   (a)   The
 9    provisions of this Article shall govern the classification of
10    every offense all offenses for sentencing purposes.
11        (b)  Felonies   are   classified,   for  the  purpose  of
12    sentencing, as follows:
13        (1)  First degree murder (as a separate class of felony);
14        (2)  Class X felonies;
15        (3)  Class 1 felonies;
16        (4)  Class 2 felonies;
17        (5)  Class 3 felonies; and
18        (6)  Class 4 felonies.
19        (c)  Misdemeanors are  classified,  for  the  purpose  of
20    sentencing, as follows:
21        (1)  Class A misdemeanors;
22        (2)  Class B misdemeanors; and
23        (3)  Class C misdemeanors.
24        (d)  Petty   offenses   and  business  offenses  are  not
25    classified.
