      625 ILCS 5/3-630
          Amends  the  Illinois  Vehicle  Code.    Provides   that,
      beginning  on  January  1,  1999,  the Secretary of State may
      allow Violence Prevention license  plates  to  be  issued  as
      vanity plates or personalized plates.

 1        AN  ACT  to  amend  the Illinois Vehicle Code by changing
 2    Section 3-630.
 3        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 4    represented in the General Assembly:
 5        Section  5.   The  Illinois  Vehicle  Code  is amended by
 6    changing Section 3-630 as follows:
 7        (625 ILCS 5/3-630)
 8        Sec. 3-630.  Violence prevention license plate.
 9        (a)  The Secretary, upon receipt of an  application  made
10    in  the  form prescribed by the Secretary of State, may issue
11    special  registration  plates  designated  to   be   Violence
12    Prevention  plates.   The  special  plates  issued under this
13    Section shall be affixed only to passenger  vehicles  of  the
14    first  division  or  motor  vehicles  of  the second division
15    weighing not more than 8,000 pounds.    Plates  issued  under
16    this   Section  shall  expire  according  to  the  multi-year
17    procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
18        (b)  The design and color of the plates shall  be  wholly
19    within the discretion of the Secretary of State.  Appropriate
20    documentation,   as   determined   by  the  Secretary,  shall
21    accompany the application. Beginning  January  1,  1999,  the
22    Secretary  may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to
23    be issued as vanity plates or personalized in accordance with
24    Section 3-405.1 of this Code.
25        (c)  An applicant shall be charged a $40 dollar  fee  for
26    original issuance in addition to the appropriate registration
27    fee, if applicable.  Of this fee, $25 shall be deposited into
28    the  Violence  Prevention Fund as created by this Act and $15
29    shall be  deposited  into  the  Secretary  of  State  Special
30    License  Plate  Fund  to be used by the Secretary of State to
31    help defray the administrative processing  costs.   For  each

 1    registration  renewal  period  a  $27 fee, in addition to the
 2    appropriate registration fee, shall be charged.  Of this fee,
 3    $25 shall be deposited into the Violence Prevention Fund  and
 4    $2  shall  be  deposited  into the Secretary of State Special
 5    License Plate Fund.
