90_HJ0021 LRB9005602CBcb 1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly 3 join with the citizens of Chicago in extending to Archbishop 4 Francis E. George a sincere "Welcome Home"; and 5 WHEREAS, On Tuesday, April 8, 1997, the people of the 6 Chicago Archdiocese received the long awaited announcement 7 that Archbishop Francis E. George of Portland, Oregon, had 8 been named Archbishop of Chicago by Pope John Paul II; and 9 WHEREAS, Born on January 16, 1937 on the Northwest Side 10 of Chicago, he is the son of Francis and Julia George and the 11 brother of Margaret Mary George Cain; and 12 WHEREAS, He graduated from St. Pascal School in 1951; he 13 attended St. Henry's Preparatory Seminary in Belleville and 14 entered the novitiate of the Missionary Oblates of Mary 15 Immaculate in 1957; he was ordained into the holy priesthood 16 at his home parish of St. Pascal's on December 21, 1963; and 17 WHEREAS, He received bachelor's and master's degrees in 18 Theology from the University of Ottawa, a master's degree in 19 Philosophy from the Catholic University of America, a 20 Doctorate of Philosophy from Tulane University, and a 21 Doctorate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University 22 Urbaniana in Rome, Italy; and 23 WHEREAS, Archbishop Francis George held various posts 24 within the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Order and served as 25 Provincial Superior of the Order's Midwestern Province in 26 1973 and 1974; he served as Vicar General in Rome from 1974 27 through 1986; and 28 WHEREAS, Archbishop Francis George was appointed Bishop 29 of Yakima, Washington, in 1990 and Archbishop of Portland, 30 Oregon, in 1996; he will be installed as the thirteenth head 31 of the Chicago Archdiocese on May 7, 1997; and -2- LRB9005602CBcb 1 WHEREAS, As a teacher, published author, and noted 2 reviewer, Archbishop George has received many awards and was 3 named Outstanding Educator of America in 1972 and 1973; he is 4 affiliated with numerous associations and sits on many boards 5 and committees; and 6 WHEREAS, With a background in international leadership as 7 Vicar General of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and a 8 reputation as a listener, mediator, and teacher, Archbishop 9 George will be well-suited to head the Archdiocese of 10 Chicago; and 11 WHEREAS, Archbishop George, a man of faith and a man of 12 the people, returns to Chicago as the first Chicago native to 13 lead the Archdiocese; he is known as a man of intellectual 14 courage with experience in both the secular and religious 15 worlds; therefore, be it 16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 17 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 18 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we take great pleasure in 19 joining with the people of Illinois in welcoming Archbishop 20 Francis E. George back to this State and the City of his 21 birth and ordination with the hope that he will continue to 22 lead the Chicago Archdiocese for many years to come; and be 23 it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to him as an expression of our respect and 26 admiration.
