90_HR0020 LRB9003198CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize 3 citizens that have made outstanding contributions to the 4 entertainment of people throughout this great nation; and 5 WHEREAS, The Dells of Chicago have been performing for 6 over 40 years and are considered one of the greatest vocal 7 groups in the history of Rhythm & Blues; and 8 WHEREAS, Marvin Junior, Johnnie Carter, Charles 9 Barksdale, Michael McGill, and Verne Allison began their 10 career while attending Thornton Township High School in 11 Harvey in 1953, and recorded their first million seller, "Oh 12 What A Night", in 1956; and 13 WHEREAS, During the 60s, The Dells toured with Dinah 14 Washington and Ray Charles; they have performed in venues 15 such as Carnegie Hall and Las Vegas; and 16 WHEREAS, Their success includes 7 gold singles, 3 gold 17 albums, and 25 charted top 40 hits; the highs and lows of 18 their lives and careers inspired the movie "The 5 19 Heartbeats"; and 20 WHEREAS, Among the numerous honors and awards presented, 21 The Dells received the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer 22 Hall of Fame Award, the 24th Annual NAACP's Image Award, the 23 Soul of American Music Award, the Illinois NARAS Governor's 24 Award, and the Jackie Award; therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 27 commend and applaud the success of The Dells and recognize 28 them as Chicago's Home Town Group; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That we extend to them our sincere best wishes 30 for health, happiness, and continued success in the future; -2- LRB9003198CBcb 1 and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 3 presented to Marvin Junior, Johnnie Carter, Charles 4 Barksdale, Michael McGill, and Verne Allison as an expression 5 of our admiration and esteem.
