 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS,  March  4,  1997  will  commemorate  the   250th
 3    anniversary  of  the  birth  of  Casimir Pulaski, hero of the
 4    American Revolution; and
 5        WHEREAS, Casimir Pulaski left his homeland of  Poland  to
 6    come  to  these  shores  to  fight  for the cause of liberty,
 7    presenting himself to General George Washington with a letter
 8    of introduction from Benjamin Franklin; and
 9        WHEREAS,  Casimir  Pulaski  was   commissioned   by   the
10    Continental Congress as a Brigadier General; and
11        WHEREAS,  Casimir Pulaski is credited in history as being
12    the "Father of the American Calvary;  while  serving  in  the
13    American  Revolution,  Pulaski formed a calvary of volunteers
14    that included  Frenchmen, Irishmen, native Americans, as well
15    as his fellow Poles; and
16        WHEREAS, History records that on October 9, 1779, at  the
17    Siege  of  Savannah,  Georgia,  Casimir  Pulaski led a daring
18    charge in order to win a victory over the enemy; and
19        WHEREAS, During the battle Casimir Pulaski  was  mortally
20    wounded,  and  on October 11, 1779, he died at the age of 32;
21    and
22        WHEREAS, on November 11, 1779, General George  Washington
23    issued  an  order for the day to all American army units that
24    commanded them to use the password and response "Pulaski  and
25    Poland" in honor of the fallen hero; and
26        WHEREAS,  In  1825,  the  grateful  citizens of Savannah,
27    Georgia began the erection of a  monument  to  honor  Casimir
28    Pulaski;  the Marquis Lafayette laid the cornerstone in honor
29    of his fallen comrade; and
30        WHEREAS, Chicago's  oldest  Polish-American  professional

 1    organization,   the   Chicago  Society,  has  embarked  on  a
 2    fundraising mission to restore the Casimir  Pulaski  Monument
 3    in  Savannah,  Georgia,  with a commemorative dinner honoring
 4    the 250th anniversary of the birth of General Casimir Pulaski
 5    on Sunday March 2, 1997  at  the  Starlight  Inn,  9550  West
 6    Lawrence Avenue in Schiller Park, Illinois; therefore, be it
 7        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
 8    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the
 9    members of the House of Representatives wish to  congratulate
10    the  Chicago  Society on their efforts to restore the Casimir
11    Pulaski Monument in Savannah, Georgia, and wish them  success
12    in their fundraising efforts; and be it further
13        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
14    presented to the Chicago Society.
