 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, Family Peace Day is  a  first  annual  community
 3    service  program  that will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 1997
 4    at  the  Richard  J.  Daley  Center,  Daley  Plaza,  Chicago,
 5    Illinois; and
 6        WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives  has  been
 7    made  aware  of this auspicious event by Speaker of the House
 8    Michael J. Madigan of the Twenty-Second District; and
 9        WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has  broad  shoulders  and
10    cares about its residents and children; and
11        WHEREAS,  The  goal  of  Family  Peace  Day  is  to focus
12    attention on domestic abuse issues, how  to  combat  domestic
13    violence and to build healthy families, as well as to address
14    legal  issues  and  to  inform Illinois' citizens of the many
15    public and community resources available to  combat  domestic
16    violence; and
17        WHEREAS,  Family  Peace  Day  is  a  joint project of The
18    Women's Bar Association  of  Illinois  and  The  Black  Women
19    Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc,; and
20        WHEREAS, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, Justice Mary Ann
21    G. McMorrow of the Illinois Supreme Court, Chief Judge Donald
22    O'Connell  of  the  Circuit  Court  of  Cook County, and Cook
23    County Board President John H.  Stroger,  Jr.,  are  Honorary
24    Co-Chairs; and
25        WHEREAS,  Supporters  of  Family  Peace  Day are Attorney
26    General James Ryan,  Chicago  Metropolitan  Battered  Women's
27    Domestic  Violence  Network,  Chicago  Public  Schools, Chief
28    Judge  Donald  O'Connell's  Domestic  Violence   Coordinating
29    Council,  Cook  County  State's  Attorney Richard Devine, the
30    Department of Children and Family Services,  Illinois  Family
31    Violence  Coordinating  Council,  and  many  legal, judicial,

 1    healthcare,  social  service  and  non-profit  organizations,
 2    including the American Medical Association,  the  Archdiocese
 3    of  Chicago,  the  Chicago Police Department, the Council for
 4    the Jewish Elderly, the John Marshall Law School, the Mujeres
 5    Latinas En Accion, and the Peace Museum; and
 6        WHEREAS, Family Peace Day will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a
 7    press conference, kick-off rally and  award  presentation  to
 8    Chicago  public  school student winners of poetry, prose, and
 9    poster contests depicting their vision of a  healthy  family,
10    from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. there will be an Expo consisting
11    of  booths  from  which the public can receive free legal and
12    medical  advice  and  counseling  or  referrals  from  social
13    service  providers,  healthcare  providers,   and   attorneys
14    practicing family law, and a luncheon awards ceremony at noon
15    at the Palmer House Hilton, sponsored by the Circuit Court of
16    Cook  County,  to  honor  those  who  have  made  significant
17    contributions  to  the administration of justice in the areas
18    of domestic violence and abuse; therefore, be it
19        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
20    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21    do hereby encourage the citizens of Illinois to  attend  this
22    most  worthy  community service program and do hereby declare
23    Wednesday, of the first week of  May,  Family  Peace  Day  in
24    Illinois; and be it further
25        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
26    presented to Susan C. Salita, President of  The  Women's  Bar
27    Association  of  Illinois, and Yvonne Owens, President of The
28    Black Women Lawyers' Association of Greater Chicago, Inc.
