90_HR0119 LRB9005539KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are proud to honor Laslo Tako of Oak Park, 4 Illinois upon his retirement as the Oak Park Township 5 Supervisor; and 6 WHEREAS, Laslo Tako is an immigrant from communist 7 Hungary; he was born in 1938 in Budapest, where he and his 8 family survived World War II and the communist takeover of 9 the country after the War; and 10 WHEREAS, Laslo Tako had his senior year of high school 11 interrupted when the Hungarian people rose up against the 12 Russian communist oppression; after the revolution failed, 13 Laslo and his family escaped to Austria, where they spent 14 several months in a refugee camp; and 15 WHEREAS, In the summer of 1957, Laslo Tako immigrated to 16 the United States; and 17 WHEREAS, Laslo Tako began taking evening classes while 18 working during the day as a tool and die maker's apprentice; 19 he learned the English language while taking the evening 20 courses; later, he enrolled in the University of Illinois 21 where he went on the receive his Bachelor of Science degree 22 with honors in 1964 and his Master of Arts in History in 23 1965; in 1972 he earned a Ph.D. in Modern History from the 24 University of Budapest, through cooperation with the 25 University of Illinois; and 26 WHEREAS, In 1973, Laslo Tako was appointed as a member of 27 the first Township Revenue Sharing Committee of Oak Park, 28 Illinois; in 1974 he was elected Township Trustee, and went 29 on to serve until 1977 as the Trustee member of the Community 30 Mental Health Board; and 31 WHEREAS, From 1977 to 1981 Laslo Tako served as the Town -2- LRB9005539KBkbA 1 Clerk; in 1981 he was elected Township Supervisor; he went on 2 to serve four terms until 1997; and 3 WHEREAS, His many achievements during his time in office 4 include: supervising the expansion of Town Hall; overseeing 5 the intergovernmental agreement between the taxing bodies of 6 Oak Park and River Forest; receiving statewide recognition 7 for the township's work with senior citizens; developing 8 transportation, home delivered meals, the senior lunch 9 program, and case management services for the senior 10 citizens; and 11 WHEREAS, Laslo Tako served as a teacher in the Proviso 12 East High School from 1964 to 1994; he worked to develop the 13 first Youth Center for Oak Park; and 14 WHEREAS, He worked to create an intergovernmental 15 agreement which created two Youth Interventionists in Oak 16 Park and River Forest; this program is aimed at preventing 17 youth from involvement in, or affiliation with, gangs; 18 through outreach, intervention, and prevention Laslo Tako 19 worked to secure cooperation between the eight local 20 governments within Oak Park and River Forest to secure joint 21 funding for this program; and 22 WHEREAS, Laslo Tako, along with his wife Katherine, has 23 decided to leave the Oak Park area and move to Tennessee in 24 order to be closer to their children; therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 27 commend Laslo Tako for his years of service to the Oak Park 28 Township and its citizens; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 30 presented to Laslo Tako.
