 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The Rev. Dr. Floyd  W.  Davis  is  a  native  of
 3    Richmond,  Virginia;  his  parents  are  the  late Deacon and
 4    Deaconess Medrith and Katie Davis; Rev.  Dr.  Davis  accepted
 5    Jesus  Christ  at the age of seven and became a member of the
 6    Cedar Street Baptist Church of God under  the  leadership  of
 7    Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, Sr.; and
 8        WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Davis graduated from John Marshall High
 9    School  and  attended  Rutledge College where he received his
10    Bachelor of Arts degree; after college  he  enlisted  in  the
11    United States Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam; and
12        WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Davis answered the call to the ministry
13    in 1971; he was ordained into the gospel ministry in 1973; he
14    went  on  to  attend  the Richmond Virginia Seminary where he
15    received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees;
16    his alma mater later bestowed the Doctor of  Divinity  degree
17    to Rev. Dr. Davis; and
18        WHEREAS,  Rev.  Dr.  Davis  began his pastoring career in
19    1973; he pastored the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the New  Light
20    Baptist  Church, and the Peoples Union Baptist Church, all in
21    Virginia; in 1992, he was called by God to serve the historic
22    Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois; and
23        WHEREAS,  Rev.  Dr.  Davis  was  recently  sworn  in   as
24    President  of  the  NAACP  South Side Branch; the swearing in
25    ceremony took place at Rev. Dr. Davis' church; Rev. Dr. Davis
26    made a promise to bring communities  together,  and  to  make
27    youth a priority of his Presidency; and
28        WHEREAS,  The  NAACP  has  historically been effective in
29    landmark cases  and  events  including:  Brown  v.  Board  of
30    Education,  the  Voting Rights Act of 1965, significant civil
31    rights cases, and the appointment of Thurgood Marshall to the

 1    Supreme Court; and
 2        WHEREAS,  Rev.  Dr.  Davis  serves  as  the  Third   Vice
 3    Moderator  of  the Bethlehem Baptist District Association; he
 4    serves  as  auditor  of  the  Baptist  State  Convention   of
 5    Illinois;  Rev.  Dr.  Davis  serves  on  the Board of Foreign
 6    Missions of the Progressive National Baptist  Convention;  he
 7    serves  on  the  Trustee  Boards  of  the  Richmond  Virginia
 8    Seminary and the Chicago Baptist Institute; Rev. Dr. Davis is
 9    a  member  of the Chicago Baptist Institute; he serves on the
10    Advisory Board of McCormick Place and  Navy  Pier;  Rev.  Dr.
11    Davis  served  as  the host of "The Pastor's Study", a weekly
12    radio broadcast which aired each Lord's Day  over  WGCI  1390
13    A.M.  from 1995 to 1996; he is a member of Northstar Lodge #1
14    F&AM and Western Consistory #28 Prince Hall Affiliate; and
15        WHEREAS, Rev.  Dr.  Davis  is  listed  in  Who's  Who  in
16    Illinois  for  the  year 1994; he is an honored member of the
17    International Who's Who of Professional  Management  for  the
18    year 1997; and
19        WHEREAS,   Rev.   Dr.   Davis   is  married  to  Mary  A.
20    Scott-Davis; therefore, be it
21        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
22    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
23    salute Reverend Doctor Floyd Davis of Pilgrim Baptist  Church
24    on  his  swearing  in  as  President  of the NAACP South Side
25    Branch; and be it further
26        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
27    presented  to  the  Reverend  Doctor  Floyd Davis of Chicago,
28    Illinois.
