1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Governor Jim Edgar has proclaimed the week of
3 May 4-10, 1997, as Correctional Officer Week within the State
4 of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, As part of the week's activities, the
6 announcement of 1997 Correctional Officer of the Year was
7 made; and
8 WHEREAS, Darryl Edwards began his career as a
9 correctional officer trainee in June of 1993; in March of
10 1997 he was promoted to sergeant; Darryl currently works for
11 the Danville Correctional Center in Danville, Illinois; and
12 WHEREAS, Darryl Edwards was honored for being
13 self-motivated and versatile; he is a member of the Tactical
14 Team, the Shotgun Squad, the Crisis Intervention Team, and is
15 an AFSCME Union Steward; Darryl is a former United States
16 Marine; as a result of his military history, Darryl decided
17 to choose a career within the corrections field; as a
18 sergeant, Darryl stresses the need for good communications
19 with others; and
20 WHEREAS, Corrections Director Odie Washington says,
21 "Edwards' commitment, leadership, and professionalism make
22 him an outstanding example for other corrections staff to
23 follow."; and
24 WHEREAS, Darryl Edwards received plaques and letters of
25 commendation from both Governor Edgar and Director
26 Washington, a $500 check from employee benefit funds, as well
27 as a trip to the American Correctional Association Summer
28 Congress in Orlando, Florida; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
31 commend Darryl Edwards of the Danville Correctional Center in

1 Danville, Illinois, for being named the 1997 Correctional
2 Officer of the Year; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to Darryl Edwards along with our congratulations.
