 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, On December 16, 1947, three scientists  of  Bell
 3    Laboratories,  Lucent  Technologies, Nobel Prize winners John
 4    Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley  succeeded  in
 5    inventing the transistor; and
 6        WHEREAS, The transistor has given rise to a multi-billion
 7    dollar   microelectronics  industry  that  today  produces  a
 8    dazzling variety of products and services; and
 9        WHEREAS, There is neither an industry nor  an  individual
10    in  this  or in any other industrialized country that has not
11    benefited from the transistor; and
12        WHEREAS, Lucent Technologies and its 10,000 employees  in
13    Illinois   continue   this   tradition   of   innovation   by
14    manufacturing  and  developing other communications products;
15    and
16        WHEREAS,  This  successful   manufacturing   effort   has
17    contributed   to  the  general  economic  well-being  of  the
18    community; therefore, be it
19        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
20    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21    mark the 50th anniversary of the discovery and development of
22    this extraordinary device by proclaiming  December,  1997  as
23    "The Month of the Transistor" in Illinois.
