1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives wishes to
3 honor Dolores E. Cross, President of Chicago State
4 University, on her upcoming retirement; and
5 WHEREAS, Dolores Cross has led Chicago State University
6 since 1990; President Cross has gone to great lengths to
7 increase opportunities for the student population; she has
8 taken a leadership role in issues of access for women and
9 minority students; and
10 WHEREAS, Dr. Cross has served on many boards, including:
11 the American Council on Education, the College Board, Campus
12 Compact and the Association of Black Women in Higher
13 Education; Dr. Cross is past Secretary of the American
14 Council on Education; Dr. Cross was recently elected Vice
15 Chair of the American Association of Higher Education (AAHE);
16 Dr. Cross serves as Senior Consultant in a strategic planning
17 project for South Africa's Historically Black Colleges; she
18 is a member of the Chicago School Reform Collaborative
19 (Chicago Annenberg Challenge); and
20 WHEREAS, Dr. Dolores Cross earned a Bachelor of Arts
21 degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University;
22 she earned a Master's degree from Hofstra University and a
23 Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University
24 of Michigan; Dr. Cross serves on the Board of Directors of
25 the Field Museum, the Chicago Urban League, the Northern
26 Trust Company, Leadership for Quality Education, Junior
27 Achievement of Chicago, and the Chicago Council on Foreign
28 Relations; Dr. Cross is also a member of the Advisory
29 Committee to the Board of Sallie Mae; and
30 WHEREAS, Dr. Cross has held several senior level
31 administrative and academic appointments in higher education:
32 Professor and Associate Provost and Associate Vice President

1 for Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota; Dr.
2 Cross has served in a state cabinet post as President of the
3 New York State Higher Education Services Corporation; Dr.
4 Cross has served as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and
5 Special Programs at the City University of New York, which
6 includes 21 senior and community colleges; she has served as
7 Professor in Education at Brooklyn College; she has served as
8 Director of Teacher Education and Associate Professor at
9 Claremont Graduate School; Dr. Cross was Assistant Professor
10 in Education and Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching
11 and Tutorial Clinical Programs at Northwestern University;
12 she was Instructor and Head Teacher in Education at the
13 Demonstration School for Emotionally Disturbed Children at
14 Hofstra University; in addition, Dr. Cross taught
15 kindergarten and special education in Newark, New York City,
16 and Brentwood, Long Island public schools; and
17 WHEREAS, Dr. Cross is a marathon runner; she has competed
18 in the Boston, Chicago, and New York City marathons; Dr.
19 Cross holds honorary degrees from Marymount College, Skidmore
20 College, Hofstra University, and Elmhurst College; she is a
21 member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Economic Club,
22 and the Executive Club; Dr. Cross is the proud mother of Jane
23 and Thomas, who reside in Minnesota; and
24 WHEREAS, On September 30, 1997 Dr. Cross will retire as
25 President of Chicago State University; therefore, be it
26 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
27 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
28 honor Dr. Dolores Cross as she retires as President of
29 Chicago State University; may her future be as productive as
30 her past; and be it further
31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
32 presented to President Dolores Cross of Chicago State
