90_HR0229 LRB9006948KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The city of Centralia, Illinois has honored many 3 of its citizens with inclusion into the Centralia Hall of 4 Fame; David H. Blackwell is one such recent inductee; and 5 WHEREAS, David H. Blackwell was born on April 24, 1919, 6 in Centralia, Illinois; he entered the University of Illinois 7 in 1935, with the intention of receiving a degree in 8 elementary education; he went on to receive a Bachelor of 9 Arts in 1938, a Master of Arts in 1939, and his Ph.D. in 10 1941, all in the field of mathematics; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Blackwell went on to teach at Howard 12 University from 1944 to 1954; he moved on to the University 13 of California at Berkeley, where he has been a Professor of 14 Statistics ever since; in 1955 he served as President of the 15 Institute of Mathematical Statistics; Mr. Blackwell has also 16 served as Vice President of the American Statistical 17 Association, the International Statistical Institute, and the 18 American Mathematical Society, and President of the Bernoulli 19 Society; and 20 WHEREAS, David Blackwell is a Honorary Fellow of the 21 Royal Statistical Society and was awarded the von Neumann 22 Theory Prize by the Operations Research Society of America 23 and the Institute of Management Sciences in 1979; Mr. 24 Blackwell has received honorary degrees from the University 25 of Illinois, Michigan State University, Southern Illinois 26 University, Carnegie-Mellon University, Amherst College, 27 Harvard University, Howard University, Yale University, 28 Syracuse University, University of Southern California, as 29 well as many others; therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 31 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 32 salute David H. Blackwell on being inducted into the -2- LRB9006948KBkb 1 Centralia Hall of Fame; and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 3 presented to David H. Blackwell.
