 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, Centralia, Illinois is the home of the Centralia
 3    Hall of  Fame;  every  year,  distinguished  members  of  the
 4    community  are  honored with induction into the Hall of Fame;
 5    one inductee is the late Lewis Van Haney; and
 6        WHEREAS, Lewis Van Haney was born in Centralia,  Illinois
 7    on June 14, 1920; Lewis Van Haney came from a musical family;
 8    His father was a railroad engineer and a country fiddler, his
 9    mother  was  a  singer,  and  his  older  brother  played the
10    trombone; by the age of ten, Lewis had started  studying  the
11    trombone,  and  went  on  to  win  the  State  trombone  solo
12    competition  his  junior year of high school; Lewis Van Haney
13    went on to study at the National Music Camp  at  Interlochen,
14    Michigan; and
15        WHEREAS,  Lewis  Van  Haney  met  and  studied with Emory
16    Remington while at the National Music Camp; he went on to the
17    Eastman School of Music and received his  Bachelor  of  Music
18    there;  while  serving  in  the armed forces, Lewis Van Haney
19    served as bass trombonist for the United States Army Band, as
20    well as two years overseas in Europe; and
21        WHEREAS, Upon his return to the United States, Lewis  Van
22    Haney  accepted  the position of second trombone with the New
23    York Philharmonic, where he spent the next  seventeen  years;
24    on  September 22, 1951, Slyvia Jacobsen became Mrs. Lewis Van
25    Haney;  together  they  raised  two  children,  Franklin  and
26    Vanessa; and
27        WHEREAS, Lewis Van Haney moved on to a career as a  music
28    teacher;  he  taught  at Columbia Teachers College, the Henry
29    Street  Settlement  School,  Indiana  University,  the  Music
30    Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California,  and  as  a
31    visiting   faculty  member  at  the  University  of  Southern
32    California; and

 1        WHEREAS, Lewis Van Haney spent his final years in Tucson,
 2    Arizona; he played for two seasons with the  Tucson  Symphony
 3    and for one season with the Arizona Opera Company; therefore,
 4    be it
 5        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
 6    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
 7    salute  Lewis  Van  Haney on his induction into the Centralia
 8    Hall of Fame; and be it further
 9        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
10    presented to the family of Lewis Van Haney.
