90_HR0246 LRB9006924KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The anniversary of German-American Day is on 3 October 6, 1997; and 4 WHEREAS, The Steuben Society of America, Chicago unit 5 will be holding the annual celebration on Monday, October 6, 6 1997; the ceremony is held to honor General Von Steuben; in 7 1777 General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben came to our shores 8 and offered himself to General George Washington in the 9 battle for America's freedom; his willingness to stand beside 10 our founding fathers makes him a valued part of this nation's 11 history; and 12 The Day is also held to honor all German-Americans who have 13 fought, served, and worked to make the United States the 14 greatest country in the world; more than fifty-seven million 15 Americans trace a part of their ancestry to Germany, and many 16 of those same people are residents of the State of Illinois 17 and the City of Chicago; Chicago has, for many years, had an 18 active and vibrant German-American community; and 19 WHEREAS, With the arrival of the first German immigrants 20 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1683, German-Americans came 21 to represent pride: pride in their original homeland and 22 pride in their new home of America; German-Americans have 23 added to the United States culturally, socially, and 24 economically; therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 27 honor German-American citizens for their contributions to the 28 American heritage, and for their optimism and pride in this 29 great nation; we congratulate them on the celebration of 30 German-American Day, October 6, 1997; and be it further 31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be -2- LRB9006924KBkb 1 presented to the Master of Ceremonies at the National 2 German-American Day celebration.
