 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives wishes  to
 3    honor  Dr.  Margaret  G.  Burroughs,  founder  of the DuSable
 4    Museum of African-American History, on the celebration of her
 5    eightieth birthday; and
 6        WHEREAS, The DuSable Museum Board of Trustees, along with
 7    the Directors of the National  Conference  of  Artists,  will
 8    hold  an "80th Birthday Celebration" on Saturday, November 1,
 9    1997; the event will be held at the DuSable  Museum,  located
10    at   740   East   56  Place  in  Chicago's  Washington  Park;
11    Co-Chairmen of the event are John W. Rogers Jr., and  William
12    C.  Bartholomay, with Peggy A. Montes serving as coordinator;
13    and
14        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Margaret  Taylor  Goss  Burroughs  is  the
15    principal founder and director  emeritus  of  what  has  been
16    called "the finest museum of its type in the country."; as an
17    artist,  educator,  arts  administrator,  and  visionary, Dr.
18    Burroughs began the DuSable  Museum  at  her  home  on  South
19    Michigan  Avenue  in  1961  and worked to secure the Museum's
20    current home in Washington Park, where they  moved  in  1973;
21    and
22        WHEREAS,  The  DuSable Museum of African-American History
23    holds a collection of over 10,000 artifacts, objects of  art,
24    and historical memorabilia; the Museum inspires the people of
25    the  community  through  the hard work that Dr. Burroughs has
26    put into it each day;  in  addition  to  community  visitors,
27    people  from  the  State of Illinois, around the country, and
28    around the  world  make  daily  visits  to  the  Museum;  Dr.
29    Burroughs  has contributed to the community as the founder of
30    the South Side Community Art Center, the National  Conference
31    of  Afro-American  Artists  of  Atlanta  and the Lake Meadows
32    Outdoor Arts and Crafts Fair, which was created as an  outlet

 1    for artists of all nationalities; and
 2        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Burroughs  is a former staff member of the
 3    American Forum for International Study at both and University
 4    of Ghana and the University of the West  Indies  in  Jamaica;
 5    the  numerous  honors  and  awards for Dr. Burroughs include:
 6    Honorary  Doctorate  of  Fine  Arts,  Rhode  Island  College,
 7    Providence,  Rhode  Island;  Honorary  Doctorate  of   Humane
 8    Letters, Lewis University at Lockport, Illinois; and Honorary
 9    Degrees  from Chicago State University, Columbia College; The
10    School of the  Art  Institute  (her  alma  mater)  and  North
11    Central College, Naperville, Illinois; and
12        WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs has received Art Prizes at Atlanta
13    University;  a  National  Endowment for the Humanities Grant,
14    1968; American Forum for International Study  African  Travel
15    Grant,  1968;  YMCA  Leadership  Award for Excellence in Art,
16    1973; Chicago Park District Senior Citizen of the Year, 1980;
17    The Black Book Service Award, 1985; The Woman  of  the  Year,
18    The  Garvin  Foundation; the Woman of the Year Award from the
19    City  of  Chicago  Women's  Commission,  1988;  the  National
20    Women's Caucus For The Arts, 1988; as well  as  many  others;
21    Dr.  Burroughs  is  a  renowned painter and sculptor, and was
22    cited by President Jimmy Carter in 1980  as  one  of  the  10
23    Outstanding  African-American  Artists  in  the  country; Dr.
24    Burroughs is a  current  Commissioner  of  the  Chicago  Park
25    District; therefore, be it
26        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
27    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
28    honor  Dr.  Margaret  Burroughs on her birthday, we thank her
29    for her work with the DuSable Museum, and we  thank  her  for
30    her efforts to give to the City of Chicago important parts of
31    history; and be it further
32        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be

 1    presented  to  Dr.  Margaret  Burroughs,   along   with   our
 2    congratulations and best wishes.
