90_HR0259 LRB9007590KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, In the 1840's, John Wagner, from Trier, Germany, 3 purchased 135 acres of land for $1.25 an acre, and settled 4 "The Wagner Farm" in the vicinity of what is now the 5 intersection of Wagner and East Lake Avenue, located within 6 the community which, since 1899, has been known as Glenview, 7 Illinois; and 8 WHEREAS, "The Wagner Farm" was under continuous family 9 ownership until 1997; and 10 WHEREAS, The parcel of land owned by John Wagner included 11 chickens, ducks, hogs, horses, and Holstein cows, with an 12 example of a typical 19th century, notch-and-peg, Northern 13 Illinois barn; and 14 WHEREAS, It is reported that this land was utilized by 15 the Potowatomi Indians prior to the arrival of the white 16 settlers; and 17 WHEREAS, An analysis of the site by the Illinois Natural 18 History Society found "The Wagner Farm" to include a natural 19 wet meadow and to have excellent potential for wetland 20 restoration; and 21 WHEREAS, As a natural classroom, this historic prairie 22 farm and its natural features would provide the opportunity 23 to encourage respect for our environment and an understanding 24 of Illinois' background as a farming State; and 25 WHEREAS, The preservation of "The Wagner Farm" as a 26 working farm for the educational and recreational benefit of 27 the public would be a tribute to one of the early families 28 that settled the "north shore area" of Illinois; and 29 WHEREAS, "The Wagner Farm" is worthy of the effort and 30 concern of every citizen, particularly of the members of the -2- LRB9007590KBkb 1 House of Representatives of the State of Illinois, to 2 preserve prominent historical remnants of our State; 3 therefore, be it 4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 5 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 6 lend our wholehearted support to the corporation of the 7 Citizen's Organized for Wagner's of Glenview, Illinois and 8 the Glenview Park District; that we encourage the continued 9 preservation of the property known as "The Wagner Farm"; and 10 be it further 11 RESOLVED, That we call upon each agency and department of 12 the State of Illinois and other appropriate jurisdictions to 13 bend every effort in the direction of the preservation of 14 "The Wagner Farm"; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this preamble and 16 resolution be forwarded to the Citizen's Organized for 17 Wagner's Corporation at Post Office Box 2501, Glenview, 18 Illinois 60025, and the Glenview Park District at 1930 19 Prairie Street, Glenview, Illinois 60025.
