90_HR0278 LRB9007690KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mr. 4 James J. McCabe, Sr., of Chicago, Illinois, who passed away 5 on May 11, 1997 at Riverside Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, James McCabe was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, 8 and raised on a farm in nearby Winchester in Scott County; 9 after his graduation from Winchester High School in 1936, he 10 began working as an electrician in central and southern 11 Illinois with the Rural Electrification Administration, 12 helping to bring electricity to rural areas that previously 13 had no electrical service; and 14 WHEREAS, After the events in Pearl Harbor, James McCabe 15 enlisted in the United States Navy, in St. Louis, Missouri, 16 in 1942; he was trained at the Great Lakes Training Center in 17 North Chicago, Illinois and then transferred to the Navy 18 Training Center located at Chicago Vocational High, where he 19 met and courted a civilian Navy employee, Marjorie Rooney; 20 James and Marjorie were married in Boston, Massachusetts, on 21 March 3, 1943; and 22 WHEREAS, After the conclusion of World War II, James 23 McCabe returned to Chicago and joined the International 24 Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #134, to continue 25 using the skills he had learned with the Rural 26 Electrification Administration and the Navy; in 1948, he 27 joined the Illinois Bell Telephone Company, for what would 28 become a distinguished thirty-four year career; James went on 29 to rise through the ranks as a lineman, cable splicer, 30 building cable installer, and finally becoming supervisor of 31 major construction projects such as the University of 32 Illinois Circle Campus and the Sears Tower; James McCabe -2- LRB9007690KBkbA 1 received recognition for bringing projects in under budget 2 and for surpassing injury free goals on construction sites; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, James McCabe retired from Illinois Bell Company 5 in 1981 but continued his lifelong devotion as a community 6 volunteer and maintained his status as a neighborhood 7 handyman; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. McCabe was deeply saddened at the death of 9 his beloved Marjorie in February of 1993, never recovering 10 from his heartbreak until he rejoined her in death; and 11 WHEREAS, The passing of James McCabe will be deeply felt 12 by his family, friends, and co-workers; he leaves to remember 13 him his sons, James, Thomas, and John; their wives Donna, 14 Juanita, and Nancy; his grandchildren, Renee, Sarah, Michael, 15 James, Thomas, Melissa, Matthew, and James; his 16 great-grandchild, Jamie; his brother, John; his sisters, Mary 17 and Anne; and also surviving is Robert W. Parrillo, his wife, 18 Emma, and their five children, Robert, Christopher, Thomas, 19 Gabrielle, and James; Mr. McCabe's late wife had raised Mr. 20 Parrillo as a young boy, and the Parrillo family is grief 21 stricken at the loss of their adoptive father and 22 grandfather; therefore, be it 23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 24 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 25 note with sadness and regret the death of Mr. James J. 26 McCabe, Sr., and we extend our sincere sympathy to his family 27 and friends; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 29 presented to the family of James McCabe with our sincere 30 condolences.
