90_HR0336 LRB9011728KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On April 23, 1848 the first boat passed through 3 the Illinois and Michigan Canal; the Canal linked Lake 4 Michigan with the Illinois River and remained in full-time 5 operation until 1935; and 6 WHEREAS, The Illinois and Michigan Canal National 7 Heritage Corridor will be celebrating its one hundred and 8 fiftieth birthday in 1998; and 9 WHEREAS, The Illinois and Michigan Canal was the first 10 major improvement project within the State of Illinois; the 11 Canal connected the Chicago market and all major river towns 12 to the Illinois River and on to the Mississippi River; and 13 WHEREAS, Each year the Illinois and Michigan Canal 14 National Heritage Corridor attracts 5.4 million visitors to 15 its many parks and museums; and 16 WHEREAS, Starting in April of 1998 a series of events 17 will be held to commemorate this historic anniversary; and 18 WHEREAS, Many descendents of German, Irish, and Norwegian 19 immigrants still live in the area of the Illinois and 20 Michigan Canal; therefore, be it 21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 22 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 23 wish to acknowledge the anniversary celebration of the 24 Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor; and 25 be it further 26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 27 presented to the Administrator of the Illinois and Michigan 28 Canal National Heritage State Trial.
