90_HR0347 LRB9011834PTbd 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The week of March 15-21, 1998 is designated as 3 National Agriculture Week, and March 25th is designated as 4 Illinois Agriculture Day; and 5 WHEREAS, Illinois is gifted with some of the richest 6 agricultural resources in the world, with more than 28 7 million acres of farm land, allowing Illinois to be 8 recognized as a world supplier of food and fiber with 9 agricultural exports totaling more than $3.4 billion; and 10 WHEREAS, Each American farmer produces enough food and 11 fiber for 129 people, 97 in the United States and 32 abroad, 12 supplying consumers with abundant, safe, and wholesome food; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, Americans only have to spend 11 percent of their 15 disposable personal income on food, earning enough to pay for 16 their annual food supply by February 9th of each year; and 17 WHEREAS, Illinois farmers are leaders in both livestock 18 and grain production; are leading producers of corn and 19 soybeans, which make up about one-fourth of all United States 20 agricultural exports; and are also leaders in natural 21 resource protection; and 22 WHEREAS, Agriculture is an important part of life in 23 Illinois, contributing nearly $50 billion to the State 24 economy, employing nearly 900,000 Illinoisans, with 25 approximately 1,400 food producing companies located within 26 the State; and 27 WHEREAS, Illinois ranks near the top of the national 28 scale in both production agriculture and agricultural 29 processing, and ranks number one among all states in the 30 production of ethanol; therefore, be it -2- LRB9011834PTbd 1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 2 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 3 salute the Illinois farmer and farmers across the nation 4 during National Agriculture Week, honoring their continued 5 efforts in agricultural production and natural resource 6 protection.
