1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Dorothy E. Davis Lyles
4 on her retirement from the Chicago Public Library; and
5 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles has worked for the Chicago Public
6 Library for thirty-four years; while working for the library
7 she reached out to her fellow workers, and both youth and
8 adults that came into the library; she served as president of
9 the Staff Association, where she worked to strengthen
10 relations between the Staff Administration and the Board of
11 Directors for the Chicago Public Library; and
12 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles was born in Birmingham, Alabama;
13 at an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior; to
14 this day she uses her Christian training to help her in the
15 decision making process, and she continues to be active in
16 her church; and
17 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles has a Bachelor of Arts degree in
18 Social Studies from Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama; she
19 has a Masters of Arts degree in Library and Information
20 Studies from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb; and
21 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles has received the President's
22 Achievement Award; she has received the Inspirational Choir
23 Outstanding Service Award; the Outstanding Service LART of
24 the Illinois Library Association; she received a Touch-A-Teen
25 Foundation Appreciation Certificate; she received the Simeon
26 High School Appreciation Certificate; and the DMC
27 Distinguished Christian Service to Humanity; and
28 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles has written many unpublished works
29 including a history of the Mapp Family of Decatur,
30 Mississippi; she is a motivational speaker for high schools
31 and adult audiences; she has spoken on black history, and

1 made speeches for women's day services and youth day; she is
2 affiliated with the Illinois Library Association, the
3 American Library Association, Tau Gamma Delta Society, Inc.,
4 Delta Chapter, the Miles College Alumni Association, the
5 Association for the Studies of African American History and
6 Literature, and the National Women of Achievement; and
7 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles is a member of the Honorable Order
8 of Kentucky Colonels; she is a past president of LART of
9 Illinois, Library Association; she is a past president of the
10 Staff Association of the Chicago Public Library; she is a
11 member of the Vernon Park Community Council of Chicago; she
12 is a member of the Evangelical Church Library Association;
13 she is a past president of the Church Choir, Greater
14 Metropolitan M.B. Church; she is the president of the
15 Presidents Leadership Council for the Greater Metropolitan
16 M.B. Church; and the Vice President of the Department of
17 Mission, also at the Greater Metropolitan M.B. Church; and
18 WHEREAS, Dorothy Lyles is a volunteer for her church
19 library; as she faces retirement, she looks forward to
20 spending time with the family; therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
23 congratulate Dorothy Lyles on her retirement from the Chicago
24 Public Library; may she enjoy long life and continued
25 success; and be it further
26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to Dorothy Lyles.
