1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Korean War has played an important part in
3 American history, and the veterans of the Korean War have
4 earned the respect and admiration of all people; and
5 WHEREAS, An armed conflict that began in June of l950 and
6 ended in July of 1953, the conflict exacted a heavy toll;
7 33,629 Americans were killed in action and 20,617 died of
8 injuries or disease; and
9 WHEREAS, The Korean War began when the United Nations
10 urged UN members to repel the Communist aggressors in Korea;
11 in July of 1950 the UN Security Council recommended that
12 member nations contributing to the defense of South Korea
13 make their troops available to a unified command headed by
14 the United States; and
15 WHEREAS, It is appropriate for us to remember the many
16 sacrifices and contributions to the cause of freedom made by
17 the outstanding men and women who served in the Korean War;
18 and
19 WHEREAS, There is a State highway, Illinois Route 1,
20 located in the eastern part of Illinois; therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23 Illinois Route 1 be named the Illinois Korean War Veterans'
24 Memorial Highway; and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
26 is requested to erect, at a suitable location consistent with
27 State and federal regulations, an appropriate plaque or signs
28 giving notice of the name; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
30 presented to Mr. Hershall Lee and the Illinois Secretary of
