1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Dante Award is presented by the Joint Civic
3 Committee of Italian Americans in recognition of the positive
4 contributions being made by persons in the communication
5 field who help to foster the true image of the Italian
6 people; and
7 WHEREAS, This year's recipient is Ms. Emily Barr,
8 President and General Manager of WLS-TV, a position she has
9 held since April of 1997; and
10 WHEREAS, A native of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Ms. Barr
11 received a B.A. from Carleton College in Northfield,
12 Minnesota, and a M.B.A. from George Washington University in
13 Washington, D.C.; and
14 WHEREAS, Ms. Barr is an executive with eighteen years
15 experience in local television; she began her career in
16 broadcasting in 1980 as a news editor at KSTP-TV in St. Paul,
17 Minnesota; she then moved to WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., as
18 a writer/producer in January of 1983, KHOU-TV in Houston,
19 Texas, in August of 1985, and WMAR-TV in July of 1988; and
20 WHEREAS, She is actively involved in the community
21 serving on the Boards of the Chicago Central Area Committee,
22 United Cerebral Palsy, the Chicago/Midwest Television
23 Academy, Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, and the Illinois
24 Broadcasters Association; she was also appointed as a
25 commissioner on the State Street Commission and is the 1998
26 United Way/Crusade of Mercy Communication Spokesperson; and
27 WHEREAS, She has been supported throughout her public and
28 private life by her husband and daughter; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
31 salute the career of Emily L. Barr and recognize her as she

1 receives the Dante Award from the Joint Civic Committee of
2 Italian Americans; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to Emily L. Barr.
