1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate South Middle School of
4 Arlington Heights, Illinois on winning the State Science
5 Olympiad on April 18-19, 1998 at the University of
6 Illinois-Urbana; and
7 WHEREAS, The team from South Middle School will advance
8 to the national finals on May 15-16 at Grand Valley State
9 University in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and
10 WHEREAS, South Middle School has won the middle school
11 division of the Olympiad ten times in thirteen years, since
12 the beginning of the competition;
13 WHEREAS, Science teacher and Coach Katie Kaufman noted
14 that the team members worked through weekends, lunch periods,
15 after school hours, and even spring break to prepare for the
16 competition; she also noted that about seventy students tried
17 out for the fifteen spots available on the team; and
18 WHEREAS, The team competes in the following events:
19 bottle rocket, don't bug me, naked egg drop, surfing the net,
20 road scholar, and trajectory; many of the team members spent
21 time with parents, coaches, and friends working out the
22 details of each event; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
24 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
25 congratulate the science team from South Middle School on
26 winning the State Science Olympiad at the University of
27 Illinois-Urbana; we wish them the best of luck at the
28 national competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan; and be it
29 further
30 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
31 presented to the science team from South Middle School in
