1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the Assyrian American
4 AMVET Post 5 on the dedication of their monument to the
5 Assyrian American soldiers of past wars; and
6 WHEREAS, The dedication ceremony will be held on May 16,
7 1998 at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois; the
8 monument is for those Assyrian American soldiers that gave
9 their lives and served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and
10 the Gulf War; sixteen names will be listed of those killed
11 during a conflict and over six hundred names will be listed
12 of those who served in battle; and
13 WHEREAS, The area where the Assyrians came from is now
14 occupied by Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey; fleeing from
15 genocide and famine in the early part of the century, many
16 Assyrians settled in the Chicago area, in Near North Side
17 neighborhoods; the monument will keep the memory of the brave
18 Assyrian Americans alive for future generations to remember;
19 therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
22 congratulate the Assyrian American AMVET Post 5 on the
23 dedication of their monument to Assyrian American veterans;
24 and be it further
25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
26 presented to the Assyrian American AMVET Post 5.
