1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the Sparta High School
4 Math Team on winning its sixth consecutive State championship
5 at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Math
6 Contest on April 25, 1998; and
7 WHEREAS, In the contest's eighteen years of existence the
8 Sparta team has taken first place twelve times; Sparta won
9 with 754 points, 57 points higher than the second place team;
10 there were 12 overall areas of competition; and
11 WHEREAS, In Algebra I the team consisted of: Vanessa
12 Salarda, Jeff Russell, Jonathan King, Curt Holland, Brittany
13 Godwin, and Betsey Berry, taking third place; Jeff Russell
14 placed third overall, and Vanessa Salarda placed ninth in
15 overall competition; and
16 WHEREAS, In Geometry, the team, made up of T.J. Joiner,
17 Josh Holder, Jared Cox, Trevor Coop, Brad Ashley, and Jimmy
18 Conn, placed first; T.J. Joiner placed first, Brad Ashley
19 placed third, and Josh Holder placed sixth in individual
20 competition; and
21 WHEREAS, Placing second, the Algebra II team was made up
22 of Patrick Zweigart, Brett Matzenbacher, Ryan Pigford, Rachel
23 Shaw, J.R. Blind, and Jennifer Ebers; Brett Matzenbacher
24 placed third and Patrick Zweigart placed fourth in individual
25 competition; and
26 WHEREAS, The Precalculus team placed third and consisted
27 of Matt King, Angela Hess, Ryan Pillers, Reid Holland, Kendra
28 Holder, and Nathan Pigford; individually, Matt King placed
29 eighth; and
30 WHEREAS, The Junior/Senior Eight Person team took first
31 place, with a team that consisted of Matt King, Ryan Pillers,

1 Angela Hess, Kendra Holder, Rachel Shaw, Patrick Zweigart,
2 Ryan Pigford, and Jennifer Ebers; the Freshman/Sophomore
3 Eight Person team, taking second place, consisted of Josh
4 Holder, Brad Ashley, Jared Cox, Nikki Joiner, Vanessa
5 Salarda, Jeff Russell, Brittany Godwin, and Jonathan King;
6 the Calculator team placed sixth, and consisted of Nathan
7 Pigford, Jamie Sparks, Brett Matzenbacher, T.J. Joiner, and
8 Curt Holland; and
9 WHEREAS, The Freshmen/Sophomore Two Person team, with
10 T.J. Joiner and Josh Holder, took third place and the
11 Junior/Senior Two Person team, with Brett Matzenbacher and
12 Patrick Zweigart, took ninth place; in the Relay competition,
13 The Junior/Senior team, with Jennifer Ebers, Ryan Pigford,
14 Kendra Holder, and Matt King, took first place; the
15 Freshman/Sophomore team, with Jeff Russell, Vanessa Salarda,
16 Trevor Coop, and Jared Cox, took fifth place; in the Oral
17 competition, with the topic "Mathematics and Medicine", Jamie
18 Sparks and Erik Perks took ninth place; and
19 WHEREAS, Other students at the competition were: Brett
20 Lessley, Rachel Dickey, Sahra Kloth, Rachel Stephens, Cory
21 Husemann, Erica Salarda, Erin Tolliver, Elizabeth King,
22 Brandy Hagene, Kendra McConachie, Laurie Juenger, and Alicia
23 Barrowes; and
24 WHEREAS, Recently, the Math Team also won the Math Field
25 Day Competition at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale
26 for the fifth consecutive year; therefore, be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
29 congratulate the Math Team from Sparta High School on a job
30 well done; and be it further
31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
32 presented to the Sparta High School Math Team.
