1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives have
3 been informed that the year 1998 is the 125th anniversary of
4 the Chicago Public Library; and
5 WHEREAS, Prior to 1871, Chicago had only private
6 libraries which required membership fees to borrow books; and
7 WHEREAS, Sympathy for Chicago residents enduring the
8 Great Chicago Fire of 1871 prompted Queen Victoria and the
9 English Parliament to donate books to Chicago for a free
10 municipal library; and
11 WHEREAS, During the years, the Chicago Public Library has
12 grown into one of the largest libraries in the United States
13 with 76 branches, two regional libraries, and its central
14 library, the Harold Washington Library Center; and
15 WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Mayor Richard M. Daley
16 and Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey, the Chicago Public
17 Library System has significantly expanded neighborhood
18 library branches and services and citizen access to
19 technology, the fine arts, up-to-date research, and
20 literature; and
21 WHEREAS, The Chicago Public Library is in the midst of a
22 year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary; therefore, be
23 it
24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
26 join with the people of Chicago and Illinois in celebrating
27 the 125th anniversary of the Chicago Public Library and name
28 the year 1998 as The Year of the Chicago Public Library; and
29 be it further
30 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

1 presented to Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago, and Mary
2 Dempsey, Library Commissioner.
