90_HR0640 LRB9012993CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House were saddened to learn 3 of the death of James E. Denney of Champaign on Sunday, 4 August 23, 1998; and 5 WHEREAS, He was born on June 15, 1918 in Ford County, the 6 son of Samuel Smith and Myrna Marie VanSchoyck Denney; he was 7 a resident of Rantoul from 1919 to 1986 and attended Eureka 8 College and was a member of TKE fraternity; and 9 WHEREAS, He was drafted in 1942 and served as a tank 10 commander during three major campaigns in Europe; he served 11 under General Omar Bradley and General George Patton; he was 12 wounded in 1944, and awarded the Purple Heart; and 13 WHEREAS, He made his career as a prison guard in Pontiac, 14 served as chief deputy sheriff of Champaign County, and was 15 elected as sheriff of Champaign County in 1950; he was 16 appointed superintendent of prisons in Illinois in 1954; and 17 WHEREAS, Mr. Denney was appointed administrative 18 assistant to the State Police in Springfield in 1960 and 19 resigned to handle the campaign for Hayes Robertson for 20 governor; and 21 WHEREAS, He was hired by Governor Richard Ogilvie to work 22 for the Capitol Development Board in major construction 23 sites; he worked as a field representative for 22 years, 24 retiring on September 1, 1990; and 25 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 26 and friends, especially his wife, Maureen; his stepson, David 27 Sims; his step-daughter, Cynthia Melchi; his sister, Marjorie 28 Sutton; and four grandchildren; therefore, be it 29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 30 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we -2- LRB9012993CBcb 1 note with sorrow and regret the death of James E. Denney and 2 extend our most sincere condolences to his family and 3 friends; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 5 presented to his widow, Maureen Denney.
