 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of this House  that
 3    Marion County is celebrating its 175th anniversary; and
 4        WHEREAS, Marion County was formed on January 24, 1823 and
 5    was  named  for  Francis  Marion, "The Swamp Fox"; there were
 6    approximately 500 inhabitants in the county in 1823  and  now
 7    there are 41,561; and
 8        WHEREAS,  Marion  County became the center of an oil boom
 9    in the late 1930s; although the flow of  oil  has  decreased,
10    Marion County is still an active oil producing county; and
11        WHEREAS,  Marion  County  has made major contributions to
12    the  history  of  the  State  and  the  country;  it  is  the
13    birthplace of William Jennings Bryan; it is the birthplace of
14    the G.I. Bill of Rights; and has sent its sons to defend  our
15    county  in all wars and conflicts since the Black Hawk War of
16    1831-1832; and
17        WHEREAS, In its 175 years, Marion County has grown from a
18    frontier area to a diverse and  progressive one, serving  its
19    people  well,  looking  to  its  past with pride, meeting its
20    present with concern for  the  needs  of  its  citizens,  and
21    planning for its future with confidence; therefore, be it
22        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
23    NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that  we
24    congratulate  the  residents  of  Marion  County on its 175th
25    anniversary and extend our sincere wishes for future  success
26    and growth; and be it further
27        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
28    presented to Marion County.
