90_HR0647 LRB9013229KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to congratulate St. Louis Cardinal Mark 4 McGwire on setting a new Major League Baseball home run 5 record on September 8, 1998; and 6 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire came to the St. Louis Cardinals as 7 part of a trade in 1997; since that time he has given his new 8 city and team the best show in town; he began the 1998 season 9 by hitting a home run in each of his first four games, 10 equalling the record previously set by Willie Mays in 1971; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire hit a 545-foot home run in May, 13 setting a new record for the longest home run in Busch 14 Stadium history; and 15 WHEREAS, In June Mark McGwire tied Reggie Jackson's 16 record of thirty-seven home runs before the All-Star break; 17 in August he became the only player in Major League Baseball 18 history to hit fifty home runs in three consecutive seasons; 19 on September 5, Mark McGwire became the third player ever to 20 hit sixty home runs in a season; and 21 WHEREAS, On September 8, 1998, Mark McGwire broke the 22 record of sixty-one home runs in a season set by Roger Maris 23 in 1961; McGwire went on to set a new record of seventy home 24 runs in a season; and 25 WHEREAS, Mark McGwire was born in Pomona, California on 26 October 1, 1963; he began his career in baseball with the 27 Oakland Athletics in 1984; and 28 WHEREAS, Thanks to Mark McGwire, the sport of baseball 29 continues to thrill the fans, and this year even those who 30 have not previously enjoyed the sport have watched history 31 being made; therefore, be it -2- LRB9013229KBkb 1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 2 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 3 congratulate Mark McGwire on his impressive record-setting 4 season; he is a role model, showing what hard work, 5 dedication to both his craft and family, and determination 6 can mean in one's career; and be it further 7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 8 presented to Mark McGwire.
