90_HR0657 LRB9013392CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Herbert I. Lerner was born in Chicago on 3 November 3, 1923 and, true to his roots, learned his way 4 through Chicago schools, from Gregory Grammar to Marshall 5 High, from Herzl Junior College to Roosevelt and the 6 University of Illinois; and 7 WHEREAS, He interrupted his continuing education to serve 8 in the U.S. Army Air Force for 3 years as a radio operator 9 mechanic on a C 46 troop carrier; and 10 WHEREAS, He returned from the war to earn his medical 11 degree with honors from the University of Illinois College of 12 Medicine in 1951, and hereinafter we can call him in this 13 resolution, as we do in real life, Doctor Lerner; and 14 WHEREAS, Dr. Lerner is a member of the American Academy 15 of Pediatrics and the AOA Medical Honorary Society and serves 16 as Senior Attending Physician in Pediatrics at Michael Reese 17 Hospital and Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at 18 the University of Illinois; and 19 WHEREAS, Dr. Lerner opened his private practice, with his 20 wonderful wife, Dr. Ruth, in September, 1954 in Hyde Park in 21 Chicago, Illinois; and 22 WHEREAS, The Drs. Lerner, ably assisted by Camille 23 Latimer, have met the medical needs of countless area 24 children with consummate skill and caring commitment, taking 25 more than a single generation from the first DPT shot through 26 the flu, from strep throat to more serious health challenges; 27 and 28 WHEREAS, Dr. Lerner was a calming influence on many an 29 anxious parent, not because of his gentle voice but because 30 of his soothing diagrams, pictures of infected bronchial 31 tubes and inflamed ear canals were my personal favorites; and -2- LRB9013392CBcb 1 WHEREAS, Dr. Lerner was always there when we needed him, 2 even making the occasional house call; and 3 WHEREAS, 643-2550 is as deeply embedded in our parental 4 memories as Dr. Lerner is in our hearts; therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 6 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 7 congratulate Dr. Herbert I. Lerner on the joyous occasion of 8 his 75th birthday; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That we celebrate Sunday, November 8, 1998, as 10 Dr. Herbert I. Lerner Day in Illinois and join with his 11 loving family, staff, patients, and their parents in salute 12 to Dr. Herbert I. Lerner, pediatrician par excellence; and be 13 it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to Dr. Herbert I. Lerner.
