90_HR0685 LRB9013694KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Winston 4 Brown of Edwardsville, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Winston Brown was born in New Orleans, Lousiana 6 on July 18, 1933; his parents were Loger and Alzina Brown; on 7 August 12, 1961 he married Jenece Zerkowsky in Alton, 8 Illinois; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown graduates from Cohen High School in 10 1953; while in high school Mr. Brown was the recipient of the 11 Jack Moore Award for outstanding athletic achievements; Mr. 12 Brown received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from 13 Eastern Illinois University; in college he participated in 14 both track and football, and is an inductee to the University 15 Hall of Fame; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a veteran of the United States 17 Armed Forces; Mr. Brown was the first African-American 18 teacher in the newly integrated Edwardsville High School; for 19 33 years he taught social studies, and for 23 years he served 20 as head track coach, and was a football coach at Edwardsville 21 Junior High School; and 22 WHEREAS, Throughout his career as a teacher, Mr. Brown 23 also served as a community relations officer with The Bank of 24 Edwardsville; Mr. Brown was a member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. 25 Church in Edwardsville, the National, Illinois, and 26 Edwardsville Education associations, the Edwardsville NAACP 27 (also serving as president), the Madison County Urban League, 28 the Edwardsville Human Relations Committee, the Edwardsville 29 Parks and Recreation Board, and was vice president of the 30 Lincoln School Alumni Foundation; Mr. Brown was a Little 31 League and Pee Wee Football coach; and -2- LRB9013694KBkb 1 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was the founder of the Goshen Oaks, a 2 civic and social organization committed to the development 3 and demonstration of positive role modeling of 4 African-American men in the St. Louis metropolitan area; and 5 WHEREAS, Winston Brown is survived by his wife, Jenece; 6 his daughter, Jenece Yvette Booker; his son, Wendell Aaron 7 Brown; his daughter-in-law, Tonya Brown; his brother, James 8 Lobdell; his sister-in-law, Marion Lobdell; his sister, 9 Octavia Gross and her husband, Harold Gross; his 10 grandchildren, Augustus Booker, Joseph Booker, and Paris 11 Nicole Brown; his in-laws, Larry and JoAnn Williams; and many 12 cousins, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it 13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 14 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 15 send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of 16 Winston Brown; may they find comfort in this time of need; 17 and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 19 presented to the family of Winston Brown.
