90_HR0696 LRB9013647MWpc 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Foreign steel producers are "dumping" their 3 products on the American market by selling at prices less 4 than their cost and below those in their home markets; and 5 WHEREAS, This trade practice is both unfair and illegal 6 under U.S. laws and international code; and 7 WHEREAS, This growing steel import crisis is causing 8 injury to domestic steel companies and is threatening the 9 jobs of American steelworkers; and 10 WHEREAS, Steel imports in May, 1998 increased 28.5% from 11 their level of the previous year; through June 1998 imports 12 from Japan were up 113%, while imports from Korea were up 13 89.5%; and 14 WHEREAS, Because of this growing crisis, a "Stand Up for 15 Steel" coalition of United Steelworkers of America 16 AFL-CIO/CLC and leading domestic steel producers has launched 17 a nationwide public awareness campaign about the flood of 18 unfairly traded and injurious steel imports from foreign 19 countries and its impact on the American steel industry and 20 its workers; and 21 WHEREAS, One of LaClede Steel's subsidiary companies is 22 located in the City of Vandalia, County of Fayette, Illinois, 23 has employed many workers, and due to this "dumping" of 24 import steel has had to lay off more than a third of its work 25 force; and 26 WHEREAS, The layoff of LaClede Steel company employees 27 certainly effects the economy of our State and, most 28 importantly, the families of the laid off steel workers; 29 therefore, be it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE -2- LRB9013647MWpc 1 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 2 would like to give our support to the Coalition of 3 Steelworkers and Steel Producers; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, that we urge the President of the United States 5 and the United States Congress to work hard in demanding that 6 the government do whatever is necessary to safeguard the 7 American steel industry, its employees, and their 8 communities; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution be 10 delivered to the President of the United States, the 11 President pro tempore of the United States Senate, the 12 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and 13 each member of the Illinois congressional delegation.
