90_SB0761 50 ILCS 750/1 from Ch. 134, par. 31 Amends the Emergency Telephone System Act. Provides that the Act has the additional purpose of establishing "9-1-1" as the primary emergency telephone number when calling for emergency services from a wireless service. Effective immediately. LRB9003223PTcw LRB9003223PTcw 1 AN ACT to amend the Emergency Telephone System Act by 2 changing Section 1. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The Emergency Telephone System Act is amended 6 by changing Section 1 as follows: 7 (50 ILCS 750/1) (from Ch. 134, par. 31) 8 Sec. 1. Purpose. The General Assembly finds and 9 declares that it is in the public interest to shorten the 10 time required for a citizen to request and receive emergency 11 aid. There currently exist thousands of different emergency 12 phone numbers throughout the state, and present telephone 13 exchange boundaries and central office service areas do not 14 necessarily correspond to public safety and political 15 boundaries. Provision of a single, primary three-digit 16 emergency number through which emergency services can be 17 quickly and efficiently obtained would provide a significant 18 contribution to law enforcement and other public service 19 efforts by making it less difficult to quickly notify public 20 safety personnel. Such a simplified means of procuring 21 emergency services will result in the saving of life, a 22 reduction in the destruction of property, quicker 23 apprehension of criminals, and ultimately the saving of 24 money. The General Assembly further finds and declares that 25 the establishment of a uniform, statewide emergency number is 26 a matter of statewide concern and interest to all inhabitants 27 and citizens of this State. It is the purpose of this Act to 28 establish the number "9-1-1" as the primary emergency 29 telephone number for use in this State and to encourage units 30 of local government and combinations of such units to develop 31 and improve emergency communication procedures and facilities -2- LRB9003223PTcw 1 in such a manner as to be able to quickly respond to any 2 person calling the telephone number "9-1-1" seeking police, 3 fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency services. It is 4 also the purpose of this Act to establish the number "9-1-1" 5 as the primary emergency telephone number for use in this 6 State when calling for emergency services from a wireless 7 service. 8 (Source: P.A. 85-978.) 9 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 10 becoming law.
