Amends the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois.
Requires the Department of Natural Resources to select a new
name for each State property and geographic feature with a
current name that uses the word "squaw". Requires the
Department to encourage units of local government to do
likewise with their properties and geographic features.
Effective immediately.

1 AN ACT to amend the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois
2 by adding Section 63a45.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is
6 amended by adding Section 63a45 as follows:
7 (20 ILCS 805/63a45 new)
8 Sec. 63a45. Replacement names of properties and
9 geographic features. The Department shall determine all
10 State properties and State geographic features with names
11 that include the word "squaw" and, no later than one year
12 after the effective date of this amendatory Act of 1998,
13 shall select a new name for each of those properties and
14 features without using the word "squaw". The Department
15 shall encourage units of local government to determine their
16 properties and geographic features with names that include
17 the word "squaw" and to select new names for each of those
18 properties and features without using the word "squaw".
19 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
20 becoming law.
