90_SR0051 LRB9005541KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are sad to 3 learn of the death of Carl H. Wittmond of Brussels, Illinois 4 on March 26, 1997; and 5 WHEREAS, Carl Wittmond was born on February 24, 1905, the 6 son of Charles A. and Caroline Narup Wittmond; Carl was a 7 descendent of the pioneer settlers of Calhoun County; Carl 8 and his family had operated the Wittmond Hotel & Store in 9 Brussels since 1847; and 10 WHEREAS, Carl Wittmond attended Quincy College; in 1928 11 he married Zelora Elizabeth Zigrang at St. Patrick's Catholic 12 Church in Alton, Illinois; in 1929 he took over the 13 operations of the family business after the death of his 14 father; and 15 WHEREAS, Carl Wittmond served as an arbitrator for the 16 Illinois Industrial Commission, receiving his appointment 17 from Governor Adlai Stevenson; from 1952 to 1970 he served as 18 a State Representative with the Illinois General Assembly, 19 representing Calhoun, Pike, Greene, Morgan, and Jersey 20 Counties; Carl was Vice President and Director of the Bank of 21 Kampsville from 1955 until his death; Carl operated and was 22 publisher of the Calhoun Herald, the county's weekly 23 newspaper; in the 1950's and 1960's Carl operated the Sunrise 24 and Sunset Orchards; Carl was actively involved in farming 25 operations around the area; and 26 WHEREAS, Carl Wittmond was instrumental in the State 27 acquisition of the Kampsville and Brussels Ferries; Carl was 28 also part of the development of the Great River Road project; 29 Mr. Wittmond was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic 30 Church in Brussels, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, 31 and the Moose Lodge; and -2- LRB9005541KBkb 1 WHEREAS, Carl Wittmond is survived by his longtime friend 2 and companion Jane Stewart of Jacksonville, Illinois; his 3 sister Virginia Burch; his nephews Charles Burch, Dr. 4 Lawrence Burch, and David Stelbrink; his nieces Mary Burch 5 and Jean Fuller; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 7 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his 8 family and friends, the death of Carl H. Wittmond of 9 Brussels, Illinois; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to the family of Carl H. Wittmond.
