90_SR0065 LRB9005656KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Mr. Lee Franklin DePriest of East 4 St. Louis, Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Lee DePriest was born February 12, 1925 in 6 Newbern, Tennessee; Lee was the oldest son of Henry and Mary 7 E. (Lewis) DePriest; Lee completed high school in Newbern and 8 developed his interest in hunting, community, and 9 Christianity; as a young man he moved to East St. Louis, 10 Illinois; and 11 WHEREAS, In 1943 Mr. DePriest was drafted into the United 12 States Army; he received an Honorable Discharge in 1946, 13 achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant; he returned to East St. 14 Louis and went to work for the Swift Packing House and 15 Granite City Steel; he went on to work for Cerro Brass and 16 Copper, where he worked as a machinist and served on the 17 credit union board before his retirement in 1974; and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. DePriest went on to study Labor Relations at 19 Illinois State University; in 1982 he became Precinct 20 Committeeman of Precinct 35 in East St. Louis, a position he 21 held until 1986; in 1984 he was appointed Deputy Assessor of 22 St. Clair County in Illinois, where he served until December 23 of 1992; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. DePriest became an Advisor and 25 Administrative Aide for the Honorable Mayor Gordon Bush of 26 East St. Louis, Illinois; Mr. DePriest served as Chairman of 27 the Clyde Jordan Senior Citizens Program, President of the 28 East St. Louis Public Library Board, Director of the Victims 29 of Crime Program for the State of Illinois, as well as 30 serving on the Metropolitan Community College Foster 31 Grandparents Program Board; and -2- LRB9005656KBkb 1 WHEREAS, Mr. DePriest was an active member of Mt. Zion 2 Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, member of the 3 Board of Trustees, President of Ministry I, member of Usher 4 Board #1, and advocate of the Senior Citizen's Program; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. DePriest was a member of the Elks Hercules 6 Lodge #90, a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, and a 7 Mason with affiliations including Master Mason of Southern 8 Cross Lodge #112 F. & A.M. 33, member of Tyree Consistory 9 #64, Past Potentate of Aahmes Temple #132, and Past Worthy 10 Patron of Eastern Light #68 O.E.S.; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. DePriest is survived by his daughters, Mrs. 12 Mary E. Cotton, and Ms. Tracy DePriest; his son Mr. Ocie 13 Melvin Nevelles; his oldest grandchild Mr. Anthony Cotton and 14 his wife Dorothy; grandsons Masters Anthony, Arban, and 15 Courtney DePriest; his granddaughter Miss Jalysa DePriest; 16 his brother Mr. William DePriest and his wife Vera; Ms. Lydia 17 Nevels and her children Jenifer and Jeremy; Mr. T. Herbert 18 Cotton and Mrs. Sarah Cotton; his dear friends and other 19 relatives, as well as the citizens of East St. Louis, 20 Illinois; therefore, be it 21 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 22 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we express our sympathy to the 23 family of Mr. Lee Franklin DePriest of East St. Louis, 24 Illinois; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 26 presented to the family of Mr. Lee Franklin DePriest.
