90_SR0181 LRB9011894CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of C. Lee Carey of Springfield; and 4 WHEREAS, He was born in Providence, Kentucky, on October 5 14, 1914, the son of the late Fred Lee and Blanche Davis 6 Carey; he graduated from Rosewald High School and received 7 two Bachelor of Science Degrees from the University of 8 Illinois, one in Physical Education and the other in 9 Recreation; and 10 WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, he was employed by 11 the Frederick Douglas Community Center in Champaign before 12 coming to Springfield as a Director of Community Centers; he 13 also was employed by Big Brother Big Sister and the Sound and 14 Light Show at the Old State Capitol; he retired as Assistant 15 Superintendent of the Springfield Recreation Department; 16 after retirement, he was a volunteer instructor at L&M 17 Gymnastics School; and 18 WHEREAS, He was further involved in the National and 19 Illinois Recreation and Parks Association, the National and 20 Lincoln Land Retired Officers Association, Frontiers 21 International, East Saint Louis Anniversary Club, NAACP, the 22 American Legion, Springfield Urban League, and Alpha Phi 23 Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and 24 WHEREAS, He was awarded first place in the Senior 25 Olympics Table Tennis competition and received the Webster 26 Plaque from the NAACP in 1966; Mr. Carey and his wife, Velma, 27 were also awarded the Community Service Award from the 28 Springfield Urban League; and 29 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 30 and friends, especially his wife, Velma; his sons, Stephen 31 and Arthur; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; -2- LRB9011894CBcb 1 therefore, be it 2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 3 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow and regret 4 the death of C. Lee Carey and offer our sincere condolences 5 to his family and friends; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to his widow, Velma Carey.
