90_SR0242 LRB9013031KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Mrs. Lureatha Jones Phillips of East 4 Saint Louis, Illinois, who passed away on August 15, 1998; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips attended Dunbar Elementary School 7 and Lincoln High School; she was married to Mr. Harry 8 Phillips in 1935; Harry passed away in June of 1989; and 9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips was baptized at an early age; she 10 united with the Truelight Baptist Church under the late 11 Reverend J.A. Lampley; until her death she remained a 12 faithful member of the church, serving under the current 13 pastor, Reverend Henry Nicholson; and 14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips will be remembered for her skill 15 as a cook, serving as a Food Service Coordinator for School 16 District 189 and cooking for the Alexander Jefferson Lyles 17 United Youth Camp; her camp cooking made the campers rate the 18 camps as "excellent" because her meals were delicious, 19 plentiful, and beautifully served; and 20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips' home became the meeting place for 21 such organizations as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the 22 Pan-Hellenic Council, the Business and Professional Men's 23 Club, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the East St. Louis 24 Women's Club, Sigma Gamma Rho's Holiday Parties, and the 25 Family New Year's Eve Celebration; Mrs. Phillips was a member 26 of Golden Rod Temple #234 I.B.P.O.E. of W., the East St. 27 Louis Women's Philos of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, the 28 National Council of Negro Women, and the East Saint Louis 29 Paramount Democrat Women's Club; and 30 WHEREAS, "Mama Lou", "Aunt Lou", or "Lou" was a devoted 31 mother and grandmother, a strong aunt and loyal sister, and a -2- LRB9013031KBkb 1 dedicated friend to many; and 2 WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips is survived by her daughter, Mrs. 3 Tunya J. Phillips Robinson; her son, Dr. Aaron Lamar 4 Phillips, and his wife, Dr. Rosalyn Phillips; her 5 granddaughters, Aja L. and Amia L. Phillips; her sisters, 6 Mrs. Risbia Randolph and Ms. Fannie G. Jones; her 7 sister-in-law, Mrs. Harriet Jones; her foster brother, Mr. 8 Maurice Sharp, and his wife, Helen; her foster daughter, Mrs. 9 Shirley M. Garrett, and her husband, Dr. Herschel Garrett; 10 her nephew, Mr. Carlton Jones; her nieces, Pamela Jones 11 Wilson, Ranese Wilson, Regena Wilson, Stephanie Jones, 12 Danyale Owens, Alana Jones, and Aleta Sharp, and her husband, 13 David; her great-niece, Shenese Jones; her great-nephew, 14 Carlton Jones, Jr.; her cousins, Reverend Mallory Jones, and 15 his wife, Nadine, and Mr. Ralph Jones, and his wife, Helen; 16 and her in-laws, Mr. Norman and Mrs. Ouida Smith; she also 17 leaves many other family members and friends; therefore, be 18 it 19 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 20 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her 21 family and friends, the death of Mrs. Lureatha Jones 22 Phillips; we extend our sympathy to her family and friends at 23 this time of personal loss; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to the family of Mrs. Lureatha Jones Phillips.
